سازمان بهداشت جهانی روز دوشنبه اعلام کرد که حدود هفت یا هشت کاندیدای «برتر» برای واکسن ویروس جدید کرونا وجود دارد که کار بر روی آنها تسریع می‌شود. به گزارش آسوشیتدپرس، تدروس ادهانوم، مدیرکل سازمان بهداشت جهانی، در ویدیوی اطلاع‌رسانی شورای اقتصادی و اجتماعی سازمان ملل متحد گفت، دو ماه پیش تصور می‌شد که شاید تولید واکسن ۱۲ تا ۱۸ ماه طول بکشد؛ ولی با وعده کمک مالی ۸ میلیارد دلاری از سوی رهبران ۴۰ کشور، سازمان، و بانک برای پژوهش، درمان، و آزمایش، تسریع این روند در دست انجام است. آقای ادهانوم گفت که برای تولید سریع، و از همه مهمتر تولید تعداد کافی، واکسن جهت حصول اطمینان «از این که این واکسن برای همه قابل دسترس است و هیچکس از قلم نمی‌افتد»، ۸ میلیارد دلار کافی نیست و بودجه بیشتری لازم خواهد بود. وی گفت که در حال حاضر بیش از صد واکسن بالقوه در دست بررسی است که از آن میان «هفت یا هشت [واکسن بالقوه] کاندایداهای برتر محسوب می‌شوند.»
